Description of the Product

The vikings were terrible news, whether they came in small raiding bands or as a large war fleet. The most striking and frightening of their weapons were the large two handed battle axes which would go down in history as Danish axes, were their wielders danish or not. The danish axe was not designed as a tool; the large and thin blade was forged for one thing only: war. The long shaft made it possible to get the maximum amount of speed, force and reach into the blows, and the thin blade cut efficiently all of the armors of the day.

A man at arms using a two handed weapon obviously couldn’t use a shield at the same time. Therefore the opponent knew right away that they were facing an especially brave and dangerous viking who was aggressive and so sure of his skill and superior weaponry that he could afford to forego shield, the most important of all protections. The large two-hander was an obvious deterrent made to frighten the enemy, but also a status-symbol. The Bayeux tapestry depicts only the huskarls, heavily armored elite warriors of the time, using these large danish axes at the battle of Hastings in 1066. The Varangian guard, the emperors bodyguard of vikings in Constantinople, also made use of this formidable weapon which made them famous.

During the 10th and 11th centuries the battle axe started to spread from Scandianvia to other areas where vikings made their mark. As the viking age turned to the middle ages, the large danish axe became a knightly weapon, although never replacing the sword. It remained in use, and as with everything else, it slowly evolved. During the 13th and 14th centuries the danish axe morphed first into the sparth axe and then into different types of pole arms, such as the bardiche or the halberd. These other pole arms overtook the simple danish axe in popularity, but it still remained in use in some parts of Europe all the way up to the 16th century.

When practicing with steel weapons it is vitally important to make sure that sufficient and proper protective gear is worn and that all the equipment is in good condition. In order to avoid accidents remember to stay careful and controlled in all circumstances.

The weapon has been made to withstand the strains of battle by martial artists, reenactors and stage performers. Forged of 51CrV4 carbon steel, and tempered to around HRC 50-52. The edges and points are thick and rounded for better nick resistance and safety. Oval-shaped wooden shaft helps you with edge-alignment and makes the weapon easier to use.
