Description of the Product

As armor became stronger, the hand and a half sword became more popular. A development of the old “great sword”, the hand-and-a-half was a one-handed weapon that provided a grip long enough for a two-hand hold. Many were made so large that they really needed two hands, but this sword is a good example of a real hand-and-a-half sword. Copied from a German sword, this beautiful weapon weighs in at 1,5kg. (actually less than some basket-hilts). Although it could be used on horseback, dealing rather slow, ponderous blows, it excelled when used on foot. Then the sword really came into its own, dealing quick, heavy blows that could cut mail and damage plate armor. Blade is flat in cross-section, with three narrow fullers. The flat blade accommodated parrying moves against an opponent’s blade, helped by side rings that prevented catastrophic cuts to the hand. Grip is wood, covered with leather, blade is tough, tempered high carbon steel. Beautifully shaped steel pommel and crossguard. A photo of the original can be seen in”Edged Weapons” by Frederic Wilkinson.
