Description of the Product
The outer shell of this bottle is made from natural leather, and its unadorned simple form makes it historically accurate for centuries of re-enactment. It will look at home, be it hanging from an outlaw’s shoulder, from a pilgrims waist or when sitting around a campfire, retelling the conquests of the day. Inside leather shell you have stainless steel bottle that keeps your drinks safe, secure and fresh. Inside this steel bottle you can safely carry any liquids, including alcohol. Alcohol is problematic with all-leather bottle constructions but safe to carry with this steel-cored bottle.
Throughout history, almost up to the present day, glass and metals have been expensive to manufacture and therefore used for rare luxury items. In the stone age the materials came form nature, and as well as horns, leather too was made use of. The first rudimentary leather tanning process is mentioned in ancient Assyrian texts, and these ancient civilizations already used leather to make containers for liquids. Pilgrims traveled long distances and carried drinking water in flattened globular containers made from leather or dried gourds, hung from belt or carried over shoulder, hence the name “pilgrim bottle”. There are examples all through the middle ages of their continued use, even as recently as the 18th Century. There was regional variation on how high up in the social hierarchy leather bottles were used, however, but for example shepherds and travelers found that this hardy and ancient method was hard to beat.
As this pilgrim bottle has modern steel bottle inside there is very little maintenance required to keep your bottle fresh. Just a quick rinse with fresh water after use, like with any modern water bottle, and leave to dry with the cork off. You can use regular washing liquid and bottle brush to wash inside of the steel bottle when needed.
