Description of the Product

This tabard with two rampant lions is excellent choice for any medieval knight back home or on a crusade. Surcoats/tabards like this were worn by knights over their plate or chain mail armour. It was primarily designed to protect its wearer from direct sunlight on the battlefield, and the various colour combinations were a decisive means of distinguishing brothers-in-arms from enemies in the fray.

In the year 1095 the Pope awarded forgiveness of all sins and everlasting peace to those who died in the crusades for Christianity and thus started the era of the Crusades. Preachers all over Europe were impelling knights and lords to war for Christianity. Someone leaving on a crusade would typically sew a cross onto his clothes as a mark of his holy quest, pack up his weapons and join in on those departing from the same region. Some of the crusades were well organized and funded by princes, whereas others were made up of poorly led attacks by peasantry. The crusades were destined for the Levant, the Holy Land, Mediterranean, North Africa and some also to Europe, for example to Finland and Baltic area in the Northern Crusades. The enemies of the Church included Muslims, Jews, heretics and pagans. The most famous of the crusades were those into the Holy Land, where Jerusalem was taken in the first crusade in 1099. The era of the European crusaders’ administration of the holy land of the three big religions lasted for 200 years, until the end of the 13th century.

This beautiful sleeveless tunic, or tabard, is made of heavy 100 % cotton fabric, and it is lined with a softer cotton lining for comfort. The tunic is divided into four contrasting squares of ivory and burgundy, with the ornaments of lion rampant embroidered in gold and antique gold, evocative of perhaps the most famous of the crusaders, Richard the Lionheart. A long belt was typically used with tabards. Belt shown in pictures is not included but you can choose a belt matching to your style from our selection or use any piece you already have with this tabard.
