At the beginning of the 2000s Ville, a physics student interested in history, wanted to start historical fencing as a new hobby. Ville ordered a sword for his new hobby from a webshop in US. He never got his sword and lost the money. The young man wasn’t too happy about this and though that there must a better way to get sports equipment and swords.
Ville started to study and learn about swords and decided to start his own company. He saved his paychecks from summer work and used it to manufacture a small batch of swords and knives and sold these to friends and first real customers (important step on the path of every entrepreneur). Soon sister Elina joined the company and over the course of two decades Irongate Armory, which has remained a family business, has grown into Finland's largest store of historical replica weapons and historical items now employing several history fans.
In 2013 Irongate Armory opened a brick-and-mortar-store in southern Finland, Kaarina to give customers the opportunity to test and examine swords, historical clothing etc. We at Irongate Armory love museum shops, so we finally got our own museum shop to run, although of course we are missing a museum 🙂
