Description of the Product
During Viking Age and medieval times, penannular brooches, also called horseshoe brooches, were used to close a cape or cloak on the right shoulder. They also fastened tunics and legwraps in place, and sometimes small brooches were used simply as a decoration. Here is a listing for two hand forged penannular brooches.
The ring brooch is a garment clasp that is well over a thousand years old and has practical uses. Especially in the Viking Age, but also among the Teutons and Romans, the ring brooch has been present. The horseshoe brooch was particularly widespread in the Viking period between 790 and 1060.
The pin of the ring brooch is inserted through the fabric of the cloak on the right shoulder and fixed with the round part so that the brooch cannot come loose.
