In the most northern parts of Europe the clothing style of the common people remained virtually the same from the Iron Age all the way to the Renaissance. Only small decorations and jewelry gave way to newer trends as the decades and centuries changed.

As a standard base of clothing both men and women wore a long dress with sleeves, hoses or pants, and some form of head dress. A dress that ended at the knees or above was called a tunic. Clothes weren’t used to identify the wearer’s sex as commonly as it does nowadays, but more commonly to display your status in the society. Men inherited and used women’s clothing and vice versa. The clothing styles of women and men differentiated clearly only as late as the 1300’s, when men’s tunics became shorter and shorter. Of course short tunics (length above the knee) were used before, but after the 1300’s it became commonplace.

In northern Europe the changes were slow, and although the tunic model is from the iron age, it would not have looked out of place on an early modern farm either. The tunic has been left simple and unadorned so it can be used by anyone irrespective of their social status, be they a wealthy merchant or a warrior, and naturally it will work well for everyday tasks at the home farm. The wool tunic will keep the adventurer warm when crossing the North Sea or the Baltic.
