Description of the Product

This Russian Kindjal is a military issue version of the ancient Georgian/ Caucasian dagger, which served the Russian armed forces well into the mid-20th century. This curved, double-edge blade with a single fuller was perfect as a close combat weapon. The Kindjal most likely evolved from the Roman short sword, the Gladius. It was best known as a Cossack weapon, used by the fierce horsemen of the southern Russian steppe alongside their sabers. The Cossacks were militarily oriented and united more by their way of life rather than ethnicity. In the highly volatile geographic area they were a force to be reckoned with. The Cossacks have stirred the imaginations of romantics for centuries as they have been seen embodying an idealized strive for freedom and a resistance to authority. The kindjal has a hardwood grip on full tang. Includes scabbard.

This Russian Kindjal should in fact be named Caucasian proto-saber. It is probably the most ancient pattern of the first sabers ever made, which originated on Caucasian steppe being invented by the Proto-Ario-Slavic People, who first amongst Humans domesticated horses and constructed horse chariots – inventions that changed the state of civilisation and ways of warfare. Even though initially they used straight, short – bronze swords, with the coming of an era of iron age they discovered that slightly curved blades are much more efficient when used from the horse back. This full-tang, proto-saber rather then kindjal is a great replica especially for someone interested in the most ancient Ario-Slavic history. It is made exceptionally well from natural materials only – no plastic, foreign in ancient times, which hence had far higher quality of life with no synthetic pollution of the environment. Wood, brass, leather, steel – those four – like 4 natural elements form this proto-saber, which is great for carrying in the woods since it is not heavy at all, displaying on the wall or reenacting without truly clashing the blade against other blades since both edges of tis proto-saber are relatively sharp. It is a great piece of ancient weapon that can be actually use in real life as small machate around the camp or even self-defence weapon in Close-Quarter-Combat scenarios. Nevetheless, I noticed few minor things that would. only add more value this this already great pice. Firstly, the blade is not completely tempered / hardened. The heat treatment goes from the blade’s tip up the around 5 cm before the hilt. Generally this is this an issue since the cutting edges are well hardened however this may become an issue if one would use this proto-saber as eg. hunting dagger or self-defence weapon and the blade would get somehow stuck. Trying to pull it out by strong lateral movements could bend the hilt area in respect to the blade around the area where the hardening of the blade comes to an end. This eliminates also the blade as a potential ladder step in a situation when there would be a need to stick the blade in between two rocks and stel on the hilt in order to come up higher or above the ground. The hilt may bend. Secondly, even though this is historically correct but I would not sharpen both edges. I would leave the shorter, spine edge unsharpened as in the classical sabres. I found that sharpening of both edges weaken the very end of the tip, which I had to resharpen already after using the proto-sabre on tatamis. The top of the tip got quickly broken – remember we are taking about just 1-2 mm of very thin metal from the very top of the tip, not about 5-10 mm of a broken tip that happens quite frequently with fancy knives and dagger that cost hundreds of euros. It took me just few strokes with the sharpening stone to fix the tip. Even though leaving one edge unsharpened could reduce the self-defence value of this proto-saber, it would make it stronger for field application and there is always a possibility to self-sharpen the plain edge. So, sumarizing – this is a very good reproduction by Windlass of what could be very similar to most ancient proto-sabers. A must have for a true collectors and historians as well as the descendant of the most ancient of all civilised human cultures – the Proto-Ario-Slavic People. The service of IronGate Armory is also exceptional. You cannot find such fantastic team anywhere else in the EU and USA anymore. Very helpful, very fast in answering questions and delivery of the items, which are very well packed, protected and secured. Truly professional team – thank you.
