Description of the Product

During the Viking Age, decorative brooches were used for many purposes, such as fastening cloaks and closing the neck openings of tunics. Animal head brooches like these were worn in pairs to fasten the straps of the apron dress. Often one or even several decorative chains were worn between those brooches, hung one on top of the other, and sometimes these were additionally attached to a round fibula or trefoil brooch in the middle of the chest. Small decorative utility tools could also be hung from the brooches at the end of chains.

The use of animal head brooches during the Viking Age on the Swedish island of Gotland, as part of a woman's costume, was very common. Many similar examples have been found there, dating from the 8th to the 11th century. This replica of the brooch found from Gotland is made of bronze and features a pin on the back, making it easy to attach to different types of garments.
