Description of the Product
Open helmets such as sallets and kettle hats were far less restricting than great helms or great bascinets of the preceding centuries had been. Although these lighter helmets allowed for better ventilation, movability and field of vision than closed helmets, they left the chin and neck exposed. These lighter helmets were favoured especially by light cavalry but were used by infantry as well. A bevor is a piece of armor which protects the lower part of the face, as well as the neck and upper chest area. As a result of the rise in popularity of open helmets, bevors were in wide use from 1450 onwards for almost a hundred years. This combintion of open helmet and bevor gives a rigid neck protection and yet it is versatile. When not needed, the bevor can be removed completely, or lowered to protect only the neck. In battle the upper part can be raised for maximum protection. Bevors would have been a familiar sight in the battlefields of the Wars of the Roses.
This articulated bevor is attached with a buckled belt at the back. Made of approximately 1,6mm steel. Due to the hand-forging methods steel thickness may vary. Made by Marshall Historical.
