Small combs like this are often called beard combs as small combs are handy when grooming a beard, but small combs like this have also been found in the graves of women. Combs were used by men and women alike. Most likely small combs were used in many tasks and were also handy when searching and getting rid of pesky lice that have been annoying people since the beginning of time. Combing yourself to get rid of lice was a daily ritual for many in human history and durable comb to be carried with you everywhere came in handy.

During the Viking Age, it was common to carry one or more hygiene pendants attached to a chain or leather strap where ever you went. The chains were attached to clothing with a brooch and the pendants hung approximately at belt level, so they were always at hand for use whenever needed. In addition to an ear spoon, comb, nail cleaner, tweezers and pricker also a key, needle box or a small knife could be attached in this way to carry with you everyday.

Several models of comb pendants from the Viking Age are known from eastern Sweden and the Baltic States. This bronze beard comb is modelled after a find in the so-called Ringerike style, one of two identical comb pendants from the Viking Age found in England and dating to the 11th century.
