Description of the Product
In battle all the extremities of the body were vulnerable to injuries, and thus needed protection. However elbows and knees can be broken with a relatively small blow and these were the first parts to be covered with plate armor starting from the second half of the 13th Century. Typically these steel pieces covering elbows and knees complemented chainmail that was worn underneath. Couters for elbow protection are an essential piece of plate armor, and together with gauntlets for hands, pauldrons for shoulders and vambraces for forearms they contribute to well protected arms.
These simple early elbow cops are rounded in shape and have no flourishes or articulation added to them, so they are perfect from around 1250 to 1350. The elbow cops are attched with a leather strap and buckle. For small warriors these couters can also be worn as knee cops /poleyns.
Simple couters like these are often also called as elbow cops. These couters are made of 1.6 mm
steel and are lined with cotton canvas for comfortable use. Sold as a pair. Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used on its manufacturing. Made by Marshall Historical.
