Description of the Product
Every warrior needs practical and sturdy pants to withstand the rigors of combat. These Viking-Era pants are made of durable 100% linen to hold up years in active reenactment use. These knickerbocker-style pants are narrow and tight-fitting below your knee and wide and airy upwards from the knee. This allows a unique look with free leg movement.
This style pants are normally wrapped with leg bindings or tucked inside high boots below the knee. The leg bindings/wrappings kept the trousers clean, dry and in good shape and naturally also gave the lower leg some additional protection both when walking in the wild as in combat. You start wrapping your lower leg below instep or heel or around your ankle and stop at the knee. Windings are not included with the trousers. You can choose windings separately to suit your style from our selection.
We don't have too many original Viking Era pants surviving till our times but it's commonly thought that this style pants were especially common amongst the Rus Vikings/Varangians that sailed, conquered and traded along the eastern river routes from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. These river routes through modern day Russia and Eastern Europe are called the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks.
These gathered, overly-baggy, trousers were a hallmark of Viking Age Scandinavian fashion and also most likely a show of wealth, as making pants like these took more fabric and work compared to simple and plain pants. There are no surviving complete baggy pants from Viking Era but we have surviving fragments from Haithabu (Hedeby) Viking settlement (close to the border of nowadays German and Denmark). Baggy viking pants are also shown in Viking stone carvings and are mentioned in Viking sagas. We even have contemporary depictions from people who ran into vikings and wrote about them and their unusual baggy pants that were gathered at the knee, like for example Persian explorer Ibn Rustah.
Flax is one of the oldest plants people have been cultivating and directions for linen textile manufacture has been found on 4000 year old Egyptian wall paintings. Linen was one of the most important textile plants in middle age Europe. Linen has been cultivated for example in the northernmost Europe from the Bronze Age onward. The linen in these pants is soft to the touch but still durable and breaths very well. Linen is naturally absorbent and dries faster than cotton. Baltic linen is grown in the Baltic and Nordic countries where long cold winters around the Baltic Sea make this plant and its fibers strong and durable. Properties that our ancestors appreciated.

Please note! Pant waist is too wide by design and the excess fabric is meant to be gathered evenly over waist with the drawstring waist. Similarly pants are "overly" long in height as in this style the pants are supposed to hang or droop down slightly making from the knee. Basically the same pants can be worn by different sized users. The longer your legs are the less pants droop down from the knee. These excess fabrics creates the bagginess effect of the pants.
