In European armies during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, officers and cavalry often wore white gloves as part of their uniforms, symbolizing their elite status and polished appearance. Leather gloves were practical for handling reins and weapons while also reflecting the discipline and high standards of these units. Similarly, in the U.S., white or light-colored gloves were worn by cavalry officers during the Civil War, especially for formal occasions.

White gloves also became part of ceremonial uniforms for mounted and honor guard units.
