The Vikings were present in York, then known as Jorvik, after its capture in 866 AD by the Great Heathen Army, a coalition of Norse warriors. They established it as a significant economic and political hub in their Danelaw territory, which covered much of northern and eastern England. Jorvik thrived under Viking control, becoming a center for trade, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange, blending Norse and Anglo-Saxon influences until its recapture by the English in 954 AD.
