Description of the Product
Perhaps the most famous crusader of all was Richard the Lionheart. The controversial, absent warrior king spent little of his ten year reign in England but instead fought for his lands in continental Europe. He was crowned king in 1189 in Westminster Abbey, and immediately began raising funds, including a Saladin-tithe on his subjects, to finance what was to be known as the Third Crusade, an attempt to win back Jerusalem from Saladin, the Saracen leader. Cruel and blood fuelled battles ended in truce in 1192 and Richard was forced to return to Europe disguised as a Templar, having all but emptied his coffers. He was imprisoned by Henry VI of the Holy Roman Empire whilst a king´s ransom was collected. In 1194 he was finally able to return to England to reclaim his crown from his brother John who had been scheming during his absence. Eventually Richard died during a small incident in Châlus, Aquitane. He had removed a part of his chainmail when the other of two bowmen guarding the castle shot him in the shoulder with a crossbow. Richard refused treatment, dying of an infection in 1199.
