This flag was the royal banner of Richard the Lionheart, King of England from 1189 to 1199. King Richard I was renowned for his boldness and leadership through the Crusades. His coat of arms featuring the three lions was used in the same format until 1340 and it has survived as part of the subsequent coats of arms to modern day. A banner was square or oblong (depth greater than breadth), charged with the arms of the owner and borne by Knights Bannerets, ranking higher than other Knights, and also by Barons, Princes and the Sovereign. The Royal Banner differs from England's national flag, St George's Cross, in that it does not represent any particular area or land, but rather symbolizes the sovereignty. It is still used as a national symbol for England, for example in sports where the English football team is referred to as “Three Lions”. The durable printing on nylon makes this suitable for both indoor and outdoor display.

Flag measures 150 x 93 cm (36.6” x 59”) with metal grommets, making it easy to fly proudly.
