Description of the Product

Naalbinding is an ancient textile technique that predates modern knitting by thousands of years. This method involves using a single needle to loop and knot wool thread, creating durable, warm garments that have distinct look. Archaeological evidence shows that naalbinding was used for practical clothing as early as the Stone Age, and its application became widespread during Roman times.

During the Viking Age, naalbinding was especially prized for producing essential items like hats, mittens, and socks, crafted to withstand harsh northern climates. The technique continued into the Medieval period until this style started to evolve into more efficient methods gradually leading to its decline. New techniques however took time to spread and knitting arrived for example to Finland as late as 17th Century and naalbinding was still being used here and there during early 20th Century to make socks and mittens. Despite fading from everyday use, naalbinding remains a fascinating testament to early textile ingenuity.

Our Viking Naalbinding-style hats, mittens, and socks are designed to look 100% like the authentic naalbinding creations, yet they are expertly crocheted. It takes a detailed close-up inspection by an expert to notice the subtle difference in technique. Each item is 100% handcrafted from 100% sheep wool, ensuring a unique and artisanal touch. Because these are fully handcrafted and do not come from a factory, there is little size and shape variation from piece to piece.

Sheep's wool is renowned for its excellent insulation properties, keeping you warm even when damp. Our handcrafted pieces are not only soft to the touch but also offer a flexible fit, combining traditional historical aesthetics with modern comfort to complete your Viking outfit or for everyday wear.

Sukat olivat juuri sellaiset kuin kuvittelin. Jämäkät, mutta hyvin hengittävät.
