In 1709, Russian Tsar Peter the Great defeated the invincible army of King Charles XII of Sweden in a small Ukrainian town called Poltava (Pultava in Finnish). 10,000 Swedish soldiers were killed - including many Finns.
The crushing defeat paved the way for the future: the Swedish Empire era ended, and Finland and Sweden parted ways.
This book depicts the course of a brutal battle from the start of the expedition to the full disaster at the end. Englund has recorded in his book the shocking fates of individual soldiers that have been forgotten in official history but have survived in letters.
