Samurai Armor & Helmets
About Samurai Armor & Helmets
The samurai helmet is called Kabuto. Notable features of the helmet, compared to Western helmets, are its ornate design and the face guard, known as Menpo. The helmet protected the warrior’s head and served as a status symbol.
Samurai armor, known as Yoroi, was crafted from individual metal plates connected with silk or leather laces. The armor consisted of various components and typically included at least the cuirass (chest armor), shoulder guards, hand guards, and thigh and shin guards.
Samurai armor and helmets beautifully showcase the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of ancient Japan. They elegantly combine form, function, and tradition into a truly meaningful piece of history.
