Description of the Product
Unlike the Vikings, the Slavic peoples did not carry Thor's hammer on their necks during the Iron Age. Instead, the Slavs had a similar magical hammer or axe, which belonged to Perun, the supreme god of thunder and sky in the Slavic mythology. Perun is remarkably similar to the Finnish god Ukko, and it is possible that they were once the same deity. The Finnish mythological entity Perkele may also refer to Perun.
The symbolic significance of the Axe of Perun has been interpreted to be like Thor's hammer. It was believed that the axe could summon thunder and lightning. Axe of Perun was also believed to protect its wearer and bring them Perun's blessings.
This axe pendant is a replica of several axe pendants found in nowadays Ukraine. This type of axe pendant is called Makarov Type 2. Makarov 2 is symmetrical, and it has curved "horns" on both edges of the axe blade, while Makarov Type 1 is often shaped more like a traditional axe blade and hence asymmetrical. The zigzag patterns on Perun's axe are interpreted to symbolize lightning and the circle symbolizing the sun. It has also been suggested that these Makarov type 2 pendants have symbolism of a ship included with the sail, stern and stem visible in the shape of the pendant.
Today, various European hammer pendants have gained more recognition through Thor's hammer. They are worn by many diverse groups, such as practitioners of various pagan religions, as well as anyone interested in history, the Viking Age and the Iron Age. This pendant is perfect for authentic Iron Age outfits, LARPing, and everyday wear.
