Description of the Product

Hunters have used blowing horns for thousands of years to communicate in forests and over long distances. The sound of the blowing horn can be heard much farther and clearer than yells and so it is no wonder that horns have been used in both war and peace, long before written history. Precise series of blows could have meant for example an alarm, attack command, signal that game has been caught, assembly call, retreat call, calling the dogs, need for help etc.

Adding a few holes to the body of the blowing horn and changing the position of the fingers (like in the familiar flute) different tunes could be played. These horns (called Vallhorns) were among the first wind instruments that could be played to create complex melodies.

The sound is formed by pressing lips against the mouthpiece and making a fast vibrating sound with the lips while blowing (same as many modern day brass instruments). Changing tension of the lips and blowing pressure the sound of the horn can be found. Horn boosts the lip-generated sound and makes it a constant sound.

Blowing horn comes with a leather strap for carrying and/or display. Made of cow horn. Total length approx. 50-55 cm (20-22").
