Bracteat from Zealand

Description of the Product

The original of this bracteate was found near Køge, Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark. Bracteates are flat, thin, single-sided gold, silver or bronze medals similar to coins that were worn as jewelry during the migration period. In some places, like in Finland, bracteates were used also during the Viking Era approx. 800-1000 CE. The bracteates used by Germanic tribes were made to resemble Roman pendants, and were used as good luck charms, as well as to reward valiant warriors. Medieval coins that are minted with a picture only on one side are also called bracteates.

The original of this bracteate is dated to the Iron Age between 450 and 570 CE and can be seen in the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen. In the middle of the bracteate is a four-legged animal and a man with a spear. These symbols are commonly associated with the Norse god Odin.

The bracteate is made of bronze and it is plated with real silver. It can be worn as a perfect accessory for historical reenactment of Iron Age and Viking Ages, as part of a LARP costume or as everyday jewelry.
