Description of the Product
Unlike the West Scandinavians, the Finnish tribes of the Iron Age did not carry Thor's hammer. Instead, they had a very similarly shaped amulet, the so-called "Ukonvasara" (also sometimes called "Ukonkirves"), the magical weapon of the Finnish thunder god Ukko.
Just like the hammer of Thor, Ukko's hammer was supposed to produce lightning and thunder. Even today, the Finnish term for thunderstorm is "Ukkonen". The jagged lines on Ukko's hammer are interpreted as lightning. The hammer is believed to help with protection, bring blessings of Ukko, and even to increase fertility.
This specific hammer is a detailed replica of a Viking-period pendant from YlipÀÀ / Lieto in Finland. The finding dates to around 800 AD and symbolizes the axe-hammer of Ukko. This pendant is made of high-quality bronze and also available plated with real silver.
The hammer was commonly worn as a pendant during the Viking Age in the Scandinavian, Nordic and Baltic cultural spheres. Different areas/countries had their own takes on the myths of thunder god, and he is known around northern Europe by multiple different names for example Thor, Perun, Perkunas and Ukko. Ukko is the thunder god in Finnish mythology. He is often depicted as an old, white-haired man, with a flowing beard and broad shoulders with a hammer, axe or sometimes even a flaming sword in hand.
Today the symbol is again worn as a pendant by various groups, including modern day practitioners of Finnish paganism and heathenry, and naturally anyone interested in Viking Age history. It is a perfect decorative accessory for authentic outfit in Viking Age reenactment, LARP or everyday life.
