Description of the Product
The Celtic cross is a type of Christian cross with a halo or ring behind it. It is mostly associated with Celtic Christianity movement, however it has much older history behind the symbol.
The origin of the Celtic Cross is unclear. What is known today is that first examples of the Celtic cross appeared during the 9th century Ireland and Scotland. In the Early Middle Ages, the crosses with ring halos were erected as monumental stones. These crosses, also called high crosses, were used as places of prayer and as reminders of the Christianization of the land.
There are multiple legends about the origin of the Celtic cross. The most popular by far is that Saint Patrick combined the cross with the circular pagan sun symbol to make it more appealing and understandable to pagans. Other theory states that the ring was originally intended to support the stone cross´s arms, but soon became a characteristic of the Celtic art.
Nowadays, as Celtic history and culture has gained popularity, the Celtic cross has become a beautiful symbol of Celtic heritage. It is worth noting that even with the cross´s Christian history it is used today as a symbol of culture and heritage regardless of persons belief system.
