The Colt M1911 is a single-action self-loading pistol designed by John Browning. It was selected as the U.S. Armed Forces service pistol .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) caliber in 1911 under the designation Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911. In 1924, an improved version of the weapon, the M1911A1, was manufactured and remained in service in the United States until 1985. This is a replica of the 1924 improved M1911A1 model, but the differences from the previous model are very small, so the pistol also passes as the previous 1911 model in video projects, etc. where the details of the weapon are not examined in close-ups.

The original purpose of the U.S. military was to find an affordable, reliable, and durable pistol, and find it they did, after all the pistol was an army service pistol for 74 years and experienced both World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and active use still continues. The pistol is still popular on the civilian side as a defensive weapon and is used in precision shooting competitions. On the civilian side, this pistol has been sold under the name Colt Government.

Even before World War I, more than a million of these pistols had been manufactured, and during World War II, the U.S. military purchased 1.9 million more for distribution to all forces on both the European and Pacific fronts. In addition to their own troops, the M1911A1 pistols also ended up with the Allies, of course, and British commandos, for example, used this pistol in World War II. The M1911A1 pistol has been manufactured in the US as well as in Norway and Argentina (in addition to pirated copies) and manufacturing continues today.

In Finland, Colt M1911 was used in the 1918 Civil War by both the Whites and the Reds. Russia had bought these pistols and they were also distributed to the military in Finland during the First World War. During the interwar period and during the Winter War and the Continuation War, these pistols were somewhat in use by private individuals and the White Guard, and the small amount owned by the military was distributed to the home front..

This pistol model has been seen in films since the 1920s, whether the film involved soldiers, assassins, gangsters or police officers. Giving examples feels almost pointless, as the M1911A1 makes an appearance on the screen in almost any film imaginable, be it Desperado, Black Hawk Down, Big Lebowski, Terminator, Training Day or Hellboy.
