Description of the Product
The Colt Navy Model 1851 is an American Civil War –era revolver, which was manufactured by S. Colt in the US as well as at the Colt London Armory. It was a muzzle-loaded cap & ball .36-caliber revolver. It used the same size frame as the .44 caliber 1860 Army revolver.
More than 250,000 were manufactured until 1873, when it was replaced by the SAA, i.e. the Peacemaker. The Navy was a single-action, six-shot weapon. The sighting consists of a tapered brass cone front sight pressed into the muzzle end of the top barrel flat with a notch in the top of the hammer, as with most Colt percussion revolvers.
The cylinder is engraved with a scene of the victory of the Texas Navy over Mexico at the Battle of Campeche in 1843. The naval theme was Colt's gesture of appreciation for the previous purchases by the Navy, and despite the name, it was mainly purchased by civilians and military land forces.
The .36-caliber “Navy" Model became very popular in North America at the time of Western expansion, and could be seen in the belt holsters of many a famous user, from heroes of the Wild West such as Buffalo Bill and Doc Holliday, to the Civil War generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. It had a six-shot, rotating cylinder, and it fired a round lead ball that was propelled by a charge of black powder ignited by a percussion cap that contained a volatile charge. The percussion cap, when struck by the hammer, ignited the powder charge. When fired, balls had a muzzle velocity of about 1000 feet per second.
- This gun is an exact replica of the original. The replica matches the original in size and weight, and the mechanisms of the weapon are working. The weapon can be cocked and dry fired like a real one. Due to the materials used, the mechanisms cannot withstand continuous cocking and firing for long periods.
- Cast metal has been used to make this replica weapon. The handle plates are genuine wood. Zamac differs from steel in many respects, so the structure of the gun does not withstand pressure, it cannot be used to fire bullets, nor can it be converted to a functional weapon by any means.
- Replica guns such as this do not require permits in Finland, nor in many other countries. However, since the gun looks real, it should not be carried in public.
- A replica gun is perfect for historical re-enactment, on a theater stage, in film productions, for collectors of historical memorabilia, and as decoration.
