English Muff Pistol, 18th Century

Description of the Product

During the 1700’s small, concealable pistols became fashionable. The smaller ones were described as "Muff Pistols" because they were often concealed in a muff. They could also be slipped inside a pocket. Muff pistols were used by both ladies and gentlemen. The muff was such a common place for hiding weapons even up to the 20th century, that the use of a muff was banned during the Finnish civil war.

This nifty-sized flintlock pistol was made by Bunney of London, who had shops in both Birmingham and London, but he marked all of his guns “London”. Joseph Bunney started the business in 1730 in Birmingham, making fine flintlock weapons. His business lasted through three generations until 1815.

This fine flintlock is decorated with engraving on the frame.

• This gun is an exact replica of the original. The replica matches the original in size, but may be slightly lighter in weight. The mechanisms of the weapon are working. The weapon can be cocked and dry fired like a real one. Due to the materials used, the mechanisms cannot withstand continuous cocking and firing for long periods.
• Genuine wood and cast metal has been used to make this replica weapon. Zamac differs from steel in many respects, so the structure of the gun does not withstand pressure, it cannot be used to fire bullets, nor can it be converted to a functional weapon by any means.
• Replica guns such as this do not require permits in Finland, nor in many other countries. However, since the gun looks real, it should not be carried in public.
