Live-action role-playing (LARPing) is a type of role-playing game in which participants immerse themselves in the story by dressing up as their chosen character. The two main requirements for LARP gear are realism and safety; for proper immersion weapons and other items have to be as authentic looking as possible, but many LARP-activities can be quite high energy, so the equipment also needs to be safe for all involved. As a result ever more realistic and safer LARP weapons have been developed as the hobby has grown in popularity.

Typically, Viking warriors would carry a shield for protection and arm themselves with either a spear or an axe, leaving the expensive sword for the rich. Making an axe didn’t require large amounts of expensive and scarce metals, which made the axe a popular weapon. An axe like this could be used in battle, but had other, more general uses too, such as chopping wood. The Vikings appreciated its practicality. If battle ensued, an axe such as this could be used as a throwing weapon, and in close combat, it was versatile, fast and deadly. 

Like other Viking weapons, axes too were often named. In the sagas, you find axe names such as Himintelgja ('heaven-scraper'), Rimmugýgr ('Battle-hag'), Tjald-sperra ('tent-spar'), Svartleggja ('black-legs; black-hafted'), Hel (goddess of death) and Hlôkk (to scream/shout in rejoice).  This axe is typical of the 9th-10th centuries.
