Description of the Product

Millions have grown up with J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings since the 1950’s. The classic epic is considered by many to be the greatest fantasy tale ever told. The story is one of the struggle between good and evil, but also of the role small ordinary folk can play in changing the world. The book trilogy was named the most popular book of the 20th Century, and Peter Jacksons feature film trilogy has won awards, as well as a legendary status of its own, since coming out in 2001-2003. The Hobbit is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings, the book having been published in 1937, and the movie trilogy having come out 2012-2014. The movies brought Middle-earth to life in stunning and faithful detail, giving that world an unimaginable authenticity, which is a major part of why the movies are still so beloved. We are thrilled to be able to bring you the swords and other weapons from these films. They may not be forged by high elves in Gondolin, or Weta Workshop in New Zealand, but they are officially licensed and meticulously crafted by United Cutlery, so that you too can own a piece of the magic.

At the end of the Second Age when the Last Alliance defeated Sauron and his forces, the Nazgûl vanished together with Sauron for a thousand years. But then eventually a Shadow returned. The Lord of the Nazgul set up a kingdom in Angmar, to oppose the Dúnedain in their northern kingdom of Arnor, and eventually defeated the king at Amon Sûl (Weathertop), and destroyed the watchtower there. The last prince of one of the northern kingdoms was also killed in that battle and was buried at the Barrow-downs, together with weapons forged by the men of Númenor for fighting against Angmar and its Witch-king. Those blades would be found almost 2000 years later in the tomb of the barrow-wight by the Hobbits and Tom Bombadil.

Samwise Gamgee, Sam, was a hobbit of the Shire. He was Frodo’s gardener who got to fulfill his dream of going to see the Elves, when Gandalf appointed him Frodo’s companion on the mission of taking the Ring out of the Shire. Sam was Frodo’s closest and most loyal companion, and he followed his master selflessly to the very end of their quest. He was one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring, and also one of the very few Ring-bearers in the whole story, even if only for a very short while. Sam played a critical role in protecting Frodo and destroying the One Ring; by Frodo’s own admission, he wouldn’t have gotten very far without his Sam, who at times had to literally carry Frodo in order to get their task completed.

At the beginning of the story Sam left the Shire without any bladed weapons, armed only with his pots and pans and seasonings. He got his sword, together with the other three Hobbits, from an ancient barrow at the edge of the Old Forest. The hobbits were captured by the Barrow-wights, and were freed by Tom Bombadil. Sam’s sword was one of the Barrow-Blades, also known as Daggers of Westernesse, originally forged by smiths of Arthedain in the middle of the Third Age for the war against Angmar. For Hobbits these daggers of the men of the West were sword-sized. Although never one to happily use weapons, Sam did have to use his sword at certain points in their journey, notably when the Nazgûl attacked on the Weathertop, in Moria at the bridge of Khazad-dûm against orcs, and in Cirith Ungol against Shelob.

The leaf-shaped blade of the sword is made of stainless steel. The pommel and cross-guard are made of metal and the grip is wrapped in genuine leather. The short sword is about 60 cm in length, and the blade is made of 420 stainless steel. The hilt parts are solid metal, and the grip is wrapped in leather. This sword is a replica of the actual filming prop used in the The Lord of the Rings- trilogy, which United Cutlery has meticulously reproduced using the finest grade materials and craftsmanship of the highest quality. The stainless steel blade is easy to care for, and is ideal as a decoration, as part of a costume, and as a collectible. The material is not suitable for fencing or cutting practice. This item includes a matching wooden display plaque and a certificate of authenticity.

Super impressed! I'll admit I'm no historian, but the cloak I purchased was both fashionable and practical! In my search for historical clothing that's more than just a cheap costume, I believe I've found my place :) Delivery for me was fast - only two working days to receive it! Though I am in Finland. Will definitely be buying from here again :)
