Description of the Product

Step back in time with these authentic peasant shoes, a traditional Finnish folk style of leather shoe worn for centuries, and still used in folk dancing and as part of a folk costume. The shoes are crafted from full leather for durability and historical accuracy.

This style of low leather slipper has had almost as many names as there have been parishes in Finland, but a general term for them in Finnish is kurpponen. These simple leather shoes were a popular shoe model, especially among the common people, for centuries. Although in Finland traditional bast shoes made of birch bark did remain in use for a long time, and leather footwear was often saved for use only on festive occasions, such as going to church. At their simplest, this type of leather peasant shoe consists of just one piece of leather cut to shape, without any need for seams. A large oval piece of leather would be gathered with a cord over the toes and the heel to form a ruffle in a “Karelian pie” style. The slipper gets a more shoe-like form if there are seams sown on the top of the shoe and at the heel. This two-piece sewn structure is also found in our version of the peasant shoe. In our version the shoe consists of a separate, slightly stiffer and more wear-resistant, insole and a softer upper.

A leather cord was threaded around the opening, and the slipper was tied to the ankle with longer leather cords. Our shoes have long leather lacing that runs from the heel over the instep to be tied around the ankle and calf, which ensures a secure fit. The length of the lacing that can be tied is approx. 130 cm. The sole is somewhat flexible, making them ideal for dancing.

This product is made with natural leather. It may contain imperfections and the roughness or color may vary slightly. These shoes are perfect for reenactors, history enthusiasts and LARP gamers. Whether you're recreating life from centuries past or simply embracing timeless style, these shoes will get you to your destination. Handmade by Karhunhammas-Beartooth.
