This clearly identifiable 18th-century pirate pistol stands out from the crowd and is decorated with sturdy carvings in the barrel and a decorative coat of arms at the butt of the stock. This pirate pistol is also used in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, an action adventure game taking place in the Caribbean during the early 18th century, the golden age of piracy.

The flintlock pistol was loaded through the barrel and black powder which was poured into the barrel was ignited by a flint attached to the striker. When triggered, the flint scratched the fire iron and the resulting sparks ignited the gunpowder, throwing a lead ball along the barrel to its target. Because the loading of such a pistol was slow and the pistol could only be fired at close range, the weapon was pactically disposable in a combat situation. After one shot, the sword was pulled out and the pistol could be used as a small mallet, to block an opponent's sword strikes, or to throw at an opponent.

When taking over another ship, it was common to carry two or even three pistols with you, if only your purse strings allowed you to buy so many valuable weapons. One gun could only be fired once during a takeover, and as there was no time to load in the heat of battle, so multiple pistols allowed for multiple shots.

There is a ring at the end of the stock that you can put a strap, scarf or piece of string through for hanging, if you so wish. With the help of the wrist strap, the pistol is safe if push comes to shove, or the strap can be tied to a belt so that the pistol isn’t accidentally dropped and lost when climbing to the mast. Similar strap attachments are still present in many guns today.
