Kilts first originated in the Scottish Highlands during the 16th century as the great kilt, filleadh mòr,  a full-length garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak. The large kilt was divided into two separate garments during the 17th Century, a sash draped over the shoulder and a kilt-skirt. This smaller kilt, filleadh beag, was invented and became popular in the early 18th century. The kilt is most often made of tartan, a cloth of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. The pattern these bands form is called a sett. Particular tartan patterns can be associated with individual clans or families, but mainly the Highland tartans had regional associations at best, and most people wore the types of tartan patterns they liked or were produced in their area. Still nowadays some clans have their own traditional tartan patterns as symbols of the clan, as fabric commonly used by members of the clan.

In 1746, in the aftermath of the Jacobite uprising, the use of Highland dress and tartan patterns was banned altogether in an effort to curb the rebellious clans. The law was followed by the Highland clearances, and by the time the law was repealed in 1782, the use of the traditional dress had become obsolete. Since the 19th century, the use of tartan and the traditional Highland dress has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland, and with Gaelic or Celtic heritage, aided and abetted by the Victorians' penchant for the romantic past.
