Description of the Product
Step into history with these distinctive beak shoes, designed for those who value authenticity and hand crafted items. Our shoes are based on 11th century Skjoldehamn shoes. The Skjoldehamn find, discovered in 1936 in Norway, consists of clothing and accessories dated to approximately 995-1029 CE, including a hood, shirt, trousers, and shoes. The garments are significant for their unique construction techniques and have been linked to both Viking and Sami cultural influences. The original shoes haven't survival fully, so these shoes are our take on the design.
Throughout history, several cultures have used shoes with upturned or beaked tips, often for practical purposes, such as preventing snow, sand, or dust from accumulating inside the shoe. For instance, the Sami traditionally wore nutukkaat (or "Lapland shoes"), which feature upturned tips suited for snowy terrains. Similar designs can be seen in traditional Middle Eastern and Turkish Ottoman shoes, which were adapted for sandy environments, as well as in Mongolian boots with beaked tips, designed for horseback riding and protection in harsh climates.
In Europe, pointed shoes became a fashion trend during the Middle Ages, with poulaines reaching peak popularity in the late 14th century and around 1450. Although their exaggerated design was largely ornamental, they may have drawn inspiration from earlier practical designs. These styles illustrate the enduring functionality and symbolism of upturned shoe tips across different cultures and eras.
This product is made with natural leather. It may contain imperfections or not be 100% regular. The roughness or color may vary slightly. The tinting is done by natural methods and the final finish may vary depending on the original leather tone.
