Description of the Product

This pendant is a detailed replica of a Viking Age pendant found in Domerarve, Öja on the island of Gotland in Sweden. The original pendant was a part of a larger find, which featured balls and lenses made of quartz crystal, some of them framed with decorated silver rings. The original find is currently in the Historical Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.

Pendants made of quartz are considerable evidence of the advanced design and craftsmanship in jewelry during the late Viking Age. Luxurious necklaces made entirely of quartz and precious silver beads have been found in Gotland, displaying the raw skill of Viking craftsmanship.

Various theories have been proposed about the purpose of quartz balls and lenses. These pieces of jewelry may have served as magnifying glasses, fire-starting tools, and some even suggest the possibility of them being types of primitive telescopes. However, concrete information about the intended use of these pendants has not been figured out yet.

Unlike the original, which was made of rock crystall, the ball of this pendant is made of glass. Instead of silver, the frames are made of high-quality bronze for a more budget friendly option. The pendant comes with a cord.
