Keys are among the most wellknown finds from Viking Age graves. Beyond their everyday use for locking and unlocking, keys were also significant status symbols. They are thought to have been particularly important for women, symbolizing their responsibility for the home and estate.

In the Poetic Edda, there is a story where the thunder god Thor must disguise himself as a bride to retrieve his lost hammer. The main elements of this disguise include bridal linens, a necklace, and a housewifes keys. This suggests that the keys might have been one of the most important symbols of womanhood.

However, keys can also have symbolized household ownership regardless of gender. Keys buried with the deceased could have been intended for use in the afterlife or served as a reminder of their earthly possessions.

These keys are detailed replicas of a Viking Age scandinavian key, dating back to the 9th century. The decoration has a gripping beasts motif in the Oseberg style.
