Description of the Product

Plates have been used by humans for thousands of years for holding and serving food. The earliest plates were likely simple pieces of flat stone or wood used by ancient civilizations. However, as societies evolved, so did the materials and designs of plates.

Through the millennia simple wooden plates, like this one, were common with the regular folk, but different materials were naturally also used. In ancient Greece, the Greeks began using clay plates known as kylikes. During the Roman Empire, plates made of various materials such as clay, bronze, and even silver were used. The wealthy elite often had plates made of precious metals, adorned with intricate engravings and embellishments. China has a long history of plate-making, with porcelain plates being produced as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). These plates were highly prized for their delicate craftsmanship and vibrant designs. During the Middle Ages in Europe, plates were typically made of wood or metal. However, by the Renaissance period, ceramic plates became more popular.

These wooden plates are made of acacia wood. Acacia was seen as a symbol of immortality because of its hardness, durability, and evergreen nature by ancient Egyptians and Hebrews.
The plates will fit perfectly for example larping and historical reenactment of Ancient times, Viking Age and Middle Age.

Acacia as a material:

Acacia wood is a sustainable and one of the most eco-friendly materials out there. Acacia trees grow fast and thrive in many different climates making it abundant material for many places in the world. Acacia is harvested and replanted without damaging the forest, keeping the environment safe.

Acacia is not the cheapest material to use, but it is very hard, naturally very dense, durable and suits well for food use. Acacia is very resistant to wear and tear and is for example popular material for cutting boards as it withstands well heavy use.

As this item is made of natural material, the grain pattern is unique in each item with varying pattern and rich, dark color.

Care:

All-in-all acacia requires very little maintenance. It is naturally resistant to moisture, insect damage and rot and thus excellent material for outdoor use also in humid environments.
After use best way to wash your plate is to wipe it with wet sponge or hand wash with warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Do not wash in a dish-washer or leave it soaking in water. Do not microwave your plate.

No chemicals were used in production or are needed as this is 100% natural wood product without any finishing on top. There is no need to oil the item regularly, but to refurbish new shine to your plate surface you can apply a little food safe oil (like linseed oil) every now and then. Also as 100% wood item, the item can be sanded and refurbished with complete new surfaces if needed after years and years of hard use. This is something that cannot be done with ceramics or plastic items, but is possible with wooden ones.

Acacia wood is biodegradable and at the end of this items lifecycle it can be composted or burned alongside firewood in a fireplace or at campfire, which means that it will never end up in landfills or the sea.
