Half gauntlets or "demi gauntlets," were a type of hand armor used during the Middle Ages. They were designed to provide protection to the hands and wrists while leaving the fingers exposed for increased dexterity. Half gauntlets were a compromise between protection and mobility, being lighter compared to full gauntlets with fingers, but at the same time giving less protection.

These gauntlets were a popular choice among knights, men-at-arms, and other armored warriors during the 14th and 15th centuries. They offered a good balance between protection and mobility, allowing the wearer to handle weapons effectively and perform various tasks that required fine motor skills. Maybe you were using a catapult or a bow at one point and a sword in the next and wearing half gauntlets allowed you to perform all tasks without problems.

The design of half gauntlets varied, but they generally featured a sturdy steel construction that provided adequate defense against blows and strikes. Some half gauntlets included additional reinforcement for the fingers or a separate plate to protect the thumb. Demi gauntlets were also sometimes worn with leather gloves that were reinforced with mail or padded leather. So you too can improvise if you want to add protection to you half gauntlets to fit better to your character or to make them more suitable to your groups combat practices.

As armor technology advanced and full plate armor became more prevalent, half gauntlets gradually fell out of use and were replaced by more sophisticated and fully articulated gauntlet designs. However, during the height of their popularity, half gauntlets were a common sight on the battlefield and in tournaments, providing essential hand protection to warriors of the medieval period.
