Description of the Product
Although first appearing in the 12th Century, the Arthurian legends generally take place in the early 6th C. Britain, where Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table are seeking to halt the invasion of the Saxons, a warring Germanic tribe, after the fall of Rome. There are many indications that England did, after a time of much strife, have a brief period of peace and prosperity in what is now called "The Dark Ages". The many different Arthurian legends feature the Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, the Holy Grail, the Lady of the Lake and the Excalibur in various scenarios.
Sir Lancelot was one of the Knights of the Round Table and the best swordsman and jouster of the age, and typically features as King Arthur's greatest companion. He is often portrayed as the embodiment of perfection in every possible way. Lancelot is the archetypal White Knight (in some tales that literally is his name, before he discovers his true name after a legenday feat), Lacelot was the son of King “Ban Benoic”, who had fought loyally at the side of King Arthur but had lost his kingdom. In the subsequent commotion the baby Lancelot was either kidnapped or taken into custody by the Lady of the Lake, and was raised by her, hence the name Lancelot du Lac, Lancelot of the Lake. He was knighted by King Arthur, but eventually his adulterous love affair with Queen Guinevere led him into conflict with all the Knights of the Round Table and led indirectly to the fall of Camelot itself. Ravaged by guilt, both Lancelot and Guinevere retired to separate lives of chastity and penitence. His unquestionable perfection and strength of character in all other aspects of his life is in such contrast to his betrayal of his king, that the tension has not only lent itself to Christian interpretations but has also been a template for stories of romantic love for millennia.
This sword honors Sir Lancelot, the legendary knight, both his virtues and his shortcomings. It features an ornate hilt, displaying several symbols and decorations from the legends, such as the Holy Grail and a dragon, that add character and appeal.
The stainless steel blade is easy to care for, and the sword is ideal as a decoration, as part of a costume, as a collectible and suitable for light cutting practice. The material is not suitable for steel-on-steel fencing or heavy cutting practice. No sheath included.
