Description of the Product
During the Viking Age, axes were one of the most common items found in every homestead. They primarily served as everyday tools but were also popular weapons, especially among the less wealthy folk who couldn't afford expensive swords.
The inspiration for this pendant comes from multiple axe findings dating to the late Viking Age. Perhaps the most famous cross-decorated axe from the Viking Age is the Cross Axe found in Ludvigshare, Denmark. About 30 cross axes from the 11th and 12th centuries have been found.
The actual purpose of the cross axes is not known. In theory, they were made of durable materials and had a sturdy structure, suggesting they could have been used as regular tools or weapons. However, the cross decoration and ornate structure more likely indicate ceremonial use and the incorporation of Christianity into everyday objects. Although the owners and users of these axes were not necessarily Christians, during this period Christianity made strong headway into Viking society and the symbols of Christianity became part of everyday objects.
Axe-shaped amulets and pendants were common, especially among the Eastern Vikings, such as the Rus. Nevertheless, they have also been found in the Scandinavian, Baltic, and Finnish regions. Axes were most likely originally symbols of thunder gods, such as Ukko, Thor, and Perkunas, and later evolved into cross axes and other Christian symbols. It has also been suggested that the cross axe could be a symbol of Saint Olaf, as both axes and crosses were often associated with him during that time.
The cross axe pendant is made of bronze and plated with genuine silver, and it comes with a meter (100 cm) long cord.
