Step back in time with these medieval turnshoes, a classic style worn throughout Europe from the Iron Age up to the Renaissance. Ankle length, with shafts that can be folded down, these types of shoes were a popular choice during the Middle Ages. The shoes are crafted from full leather for durability and historical accuracy. The leather heel is raised at the back for longevity.

Turnshoes were a popular shoe style with a lot of variation, as the construction was fairly simple they could be made at home without an excessive amount of experience. Turnshoes often consist of only two pieces of leather, one for the sole and one for the upper, which wraps around the foot. The shoe was sown inside out, and then turned, hence the name. This meant the bottom seam between the sole and the upper was on the inside, which made the construction more durable. Also having the seam on the inside made the shoe more waterproof. Later an additional outer sole was often added for durability, like in our version. Turnshoes were often embroidered, but our model has been left plain so that is appropriate for as many time periods as possible.

These turnshoes have a leather strap lacing which threads around the whole shoe for a secure fit. The shoes are very versatile for many different looks. You can wear the long (c. 160 cm) straps either around the calf, with the shaft turned up or down, or tie the straps under the downturned shaft.

This product is made with natural leather. It may contain imperfections and the roughness or color may vary slightly.
