Description of the Product

During Viking Age, brooches were used to close the neckline of a tunic, cloak or just for a decoration in general. This oval brooch is made with real silver plating, and it is a detailed replica of a Viking brooch found in Norwegian province of Akershus. The original find dates back to 9th century.

This Viking Age oval brooch has an openwork filigree motif in so-called Borre Style. The Borre style is particularly characterized by mirror-symmetrical motifs, which are often expressed in braided ribbon ornamentation, such as ring chains and pretzel knots, where several mythical creatures are often connected with geometric knot formations. It was most popular during 9th-10th century.

The oval brooches served - always worn in pairs - to attach the shoulder straps of the upper garment to the apron. They were used mainly by women.

Often one or even several chains were worn between the brooches, hung one on top of the other, and sometimes these were additionally attached to a round fibula or trefoil brooch in the middle of the chest. On the back of this brooch, there is a sturdy needle to help with different attachments.

Since the oval brooch was always worn in pairs in the Viking Age to fasten shoulder straps, it is advisable to order two pieces. The price is for a single (1) oval brooch.
