Description of the Product
The gambeson, or aketon as it is also called, would shield from crushing blows and were typically used underneath mail or plated armour, but also as an extra layer of protection on top of chainmail. This type of combination gave the soldier a good protection against many types of attack. As chainmail was expensive, gambeson was often the infantrymanâs only piece of body-armor. Gambesons were worn by common infantry, knights and men-at-arms alike.
The quilted 100 % cotton body makes it a great addition over or under a shirt of mail. The padding on this gambeson is soft and semi-thick and is better suited for historical reenactment than buhurt where one needs thick and heavy padding. The gambeson is divided into four contrasting squares of ivory and burgundy, with the ornaments of lion rampant embroidered in gold and antique gold, evocative of perhaps the most famous of the crusaders, Richard the Lionheart.
Belt shown in pictures is not included but you can choose a belt matching to your style from our selection or use any piece you already have with this gambeson.
