La Tène Celt Knife

Description of the Product

This medium sized knife is a replica of historical Celtic knifes from the La Tène period. This knife is based on the so-called Celtic ring knives of the 6th - 4th centuries BC that were common then and used in wide area across Europe. This era of the Celtic culture is called the La Tène culture. La Tène culture is a continuation of the earlier Hallstat culture and these two divide the continuous Celtic era to two halves (early Iron Age and late Iron Age).

During the La Tène culture the Celts lived all across central Europe from the British Isles to Belgium, France, southern Germany, Austria, Hungary and also all the way to Spain. La Tène Celts traded with Romans but also warred against them and for example sacked Rome in 387 BC. Sacking of Rome famously lead to Roman-Gallic Wars and eventually Julius Caesar invading and conquering Gaul in 58-50 BC.

This elegant curved knife is forged by hand from a single piece of carbon steel and has beautiful matte black rustic surface. The handle material of original Celtic knives hasn't survived but these probably were covered with leather for better handling - as in our reproduction.

This knife is perfectly suitable for Celtic or Roman Era re-enactment and can just as easily be used in modern kitchen or as a camping tool. This knife comes with a leather sheath and is sharpened. The color of the leather may vary from brown to black. The hardness of the knife is 54 to 56 HCR Rockwell.
