Description of the Product
This stylish Torino Main Gauche is a matching left-hand dagger for the Torino Rapier, a 17th century swept-hilt rapier of north-Italian ancestry. A Main Gauche was often used together with a rapier. It provided an added dimension in both offense and defense, and many fencing schools in Europe during the 1600’s taught these two weapons in combination. The Main Gauche would often match its rapier in style, but attention was also paid to enhancing its effectiveness and functionality.
The intricacies of the Italian style of rapier and dagger –fencing are thoroughly demonstrated by Ridolfo Capo Ferro, or Capoferro, a fencing master in the Italian tradition. Capoferro’s fencing manual “Gran Simulacro” from 1610 is one of the most famous fencing manuals in the world. The style spread throughout Europe and dominated the world of dueling all the way to the 1800’s, and his art is still practiced to this day.
The Torino Main Gauche features a blade of high-carbon steel which has been tempered and a stainless steel hilt for reduced maintenance. The grip is wrapped in twisted wire and decorated with two Turkish knots. If needed, the blade is interchangeable with a blunt practical blade, designed for safety during sparring. Comes with a sheath with black leather wrap and steel accents.
