Description of the Product

The unicorn is a legendary creature in European literature and art spanning the last thousand years. Before that, in antiquity, mentions of them are found in accounts of natural history, as well as in the Bible. The unicorn is described as a beast with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn, often depicted as a white horse- or goat-like animal.

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was a symbol of purity and grace, and so extremely wild that it could be captured only by a virgin. Leonardo de Vinci even described this method of unicorn entrapment by fair maidens in one of his notebooks.

The horn of a unicorn, alicorn, was said to have the power to cure many diseases and have the ability to detect poisons. Alicorn powder (in reality made from the tusks of narwhals or other horns) was sold in Europe as late as 1741.

A winged unicorn, a horse with wings and a horn, combines the characteristics of the unicorn with a winged horse, such as the well-known Pegasus from Greek mythology. These creatures may also sometimes be called Unipeg, Pegacorn, Alicorn, Alaricorn and Unipegasus.
